Day 92 Altmannstein – Kelheim

An early start, well prepared for a hot day. Extra water and a cucumber on the bag, let the day begin!

We start with a nice trail through the forest, and when we walk into the fields the tractor in front of us blows up the dust on the gravel road with a beautiful view over the valley. It’s a really pretty picture we’re walking through right now.

It’s only 8 in the morning and it’s already really warm on the straight field roads with grain, corn and hop. Well prepared and well rested, we enjoy it despite the temperature. Especially when we find a cherry tree next to the road …

We ask for water in a nearby house, so we have enough for the rest of the walk. We walk past a Roman watchtower and continue this trail through a forest and towards the river Donau. It feels like a milestone to reach the Donau. This is always a river that is far away in my mind. And now we walked there!

We enjoy the walk along the river, and after that go up the hill to enjoy views over the river. We walk towards Kloster Weltenburg, a beautiful convent in a bend of the river. We see people there and an open café. We just need to find a way to cross the river… When we get close, there is a sign that suggests you can cross by boat. And sure enough, within minutes of our arrival, a boat appears. You can do a round tour with the boat, but it also ferries people across to the convent. It comes every 30 minutes. Luckily we didn’t have to wait long!

At the convent we have 2 apple schorles and enjoy a good break. We almost forget the time, and by the time we paid and walked to the boat landing, the boat just arrives. Second time lucky!

We continue our walk towards Kelheim, across a hill where there’s a peace monument to remember gaining independence after defeating Napoleon. It’s an impressive building indeed.

From there we go down into the city, where we have another ‘schorle break’ and a resupply for tomorrow’s lunch.

From Kelheim it’s another 4 km to Frauenhausl, a forest café where we have diner. The walk up the hill is strenuous, and we’re sweating everywhere…🥵

The Frauenhausl is worth it though. The food is great, and we learn new food, Obazda is a cheese dish and it’s quite good, although the way of eating is still a bit of a mystery.

The cherry pie is absolutely delicious, and after dinner, 2 happy hikers leave the café 😋

We continue another 10 minutes, before pitching our tent. 30 km walked, well done.

We’re slowly getting into an area where internet and phone connection can be a thing. No reception tonight! No phoning friends or sending pictures, no trail blog for you guys (found internet the next morning when we walked into Saxberg, so here’s the blog 😅😁.

This lack of reception might happen more often from here I guess..

Time to read a book and chill!
