We had a great first zeroday in Vienna!We used the bicycle as a form of transport for once, a great move. This way we can enjoy everything the city has to offer, without walking to much 😁
We enjoyed ourselves that much that we decided in the evening to stay an extra day. 3 Zeroday’s in a row!
After a lazy start we went for breakfast at the Naschmarkt, and did our first resupply at the supermarket.
After that, we rented bicycles that are around the city everywhere. First stop was a good coffeebar to enjoy something else than instant coffee 😁.
From there we go to the post office to post my old backpack home. This provides a challenge, as backpacks do t come in ‘box-size’, and apparently packages need to be rectangular…. With a banana box, a pair of scissors and a lot of tape, we craft an acceptable package.
Next job is getting new inlay soles and new shoes for me. The store that makes the inlays doesn’t have my shoes, but they tell me the store around the corner does. So while I get my soles into the right shape, Mark takes one of my shoes and goes for new ones. What a teamwork!
We dump our newly bought stuff at the appartment and cycle to the Belvedere gallery. Here we visit the art museum that houses the Kiss from Gustav Klimt. Mark really wanted to see this painting and is eager to get to that room first.
We’re kind of disappointed by what we see; a group of people that individually have their photo taken with the painting in true photoshoot style… The whole ‘lets make it about me’ vibe feels wrong.
We walk to the next room and enjoy the other paintings the Belvedere has on display. At the end, we return to the Kiss, where it’s less busy then. I also discover a display in braille where you can feel shape, size and patterns in the painting. We enjoy the Kiss more this time around and after that, leave the museum.
At the steps of the Belvedere we take a seat and enjoy the view. We try to let it sink in that we are in Vienna 😁.
With our bicycles we get back to our appartment and go for another asian dinner, Dim Sum this time. After dinner we enjoy a few hours of doing nothing (mark) or reading a book (me). We finish our evening with a musical light show in the Votiv church. It’s an amazing spectacle that celebrates the creation of life on earth. After a great show we cycle home. In the dark in a strange city, with only the audio of Google maps it’s quite challenging to find our way ànd use the cyclepath, since it changes constantly from shared with pedestrians, on the road and bicycles only.
Yet it’s really cool to cycle past all these enormous, classical buildings.
