Day 35, Barmby upon Marsh – Brough

Weather: ☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
Food: 🥪🥪🥪🥪(4 out of 5, a 5 out of 5 2nd breakfast and later a uninspiring wrap, therefore averaging 4 out of 5)
Track: 🇬🇧🇬🇧 (2 out of 5, ok trail, but just too many grassy dykes today)
AirBNB: 🛌🛌🛌 (3 out of 5, nice house, good shower and friendly owners!)
Name of followed trail: Trans Pennine trail
Special mention: The hospitality we received at the Saltmarshe hall, a great looking place where they re-opened the kitchen for us to serve us a great 2nd breakfast!

After a rainy night, we leave our campsite on a cloudy morning. We hike grassy dykes for a few hours. The most exciting thing that happens is that we see Derrick again, passing is in a car, and we save a sheep that’s stuck with its head in the fence. After saving it, I have to conclude that sheep are truly stupid animals. Whilst trying to get it out of the fence, it keeps running into it, trying to escape from me….😖

A while later we walk from the dykes onto the road and into a string of small villages. When we get on a road through fields lined with trees, we see a sign. Jokingly we say:”oh, look, there must be a pub there!” And while not a pub, the sign of Saltmarshe hall speaks of bed& breakfast and afternoon tea… time to find out a bit more!

They are open, but we’re too late for breakfast. The ladies at reception kindly ask the chef and he offers to make 2 full English breakfasts. Full English it is then! We get seated in the library of this really well restored old house. Mark is immediately triggered by the book cupboard, that also is a hidden door. What a great place this is, the staff is super friendly and the breakfast is really good!!

Happy with this stop, we continue the next 20 km over mostly grassy dykes. A variety in flatness of the surface and length of the grass follows. Most of the time we have to watch carefully where we step, and have less time to look around. When we do look, we see the landscape slowly changing from fields to salty grounds of the estuary. Slowly we are nearing the other end of England.

After a seemingly endless walk, we do arrive in Brough, and right in time, because after a short visit to the supermarket we get to our Airbnb, just before it starts to rain!

Tired after a long day with very little breaks, we have a shower and a rest before we go to dinner in town. And after dinner? Hikers bedtime 😅😁🛌
